11th Hour Racing support sports and maritime communities to promote collaborative, systemic change. Their name evokes a sense of urgency; we are at the final hour in the struggle to save our ocean.
Project overview
11th Hour Racing collaborated with four grantees in Puerto Rico to restore ecosystems that serve as the island’s first line of defence against storm surges. Their work in Jobos Bay is the largest mangrove restoration effort ever attempted in North America.
In recognition of the hard work of their grantees, 11th Hour Racing wanted to showcase and celebrate their achievements with a long-form editorial piece and a downloadable PDF, within their editorial offering 11th Hour Storytelling.
Delivery
I led the project as senior UX designer, scoping out requirements with an early stage scamp before building this into considered, detailed wireframes. Since 11th Hour Racing worked on this simultaneously we took an agile approach, amending and updating the wireframes to fit the evolving requirements across several months.
The client wanted an impactful design that reflected the high quality work of their brilliant grantees. With this - and their budget - in mind, I designed the wireframes to incorporate leading visual storytelling techniques, pushing the boundaries of development within publishing, whilst maintaining an editorial aesthetic.
I handed over to a junior designer to apply the UI, oversaw / QA'd the final design, and created the downloadable PDF case studies.

Results
The final piece delivers a powerful, immersive storytelling experience that elevates the scale and significance of 11th Hour Racing’s work in Puerto Rico. Rich, long-form design and considered user flow guide readers through the narrative, increasing engagement and encouraging deeper exploration of the project and its impact. Built with flexibility in mind, the layout also offers an editorial framework for future 11th Hour Storytelling features, strengthening consistency while reducing production time. The downloadable PDF also serves as a shareable asset for partners, stakeholders and press.
